Spectrum of the corona, with Mercury. Note that the green coronal line Fe XIV (Iron 13 times ionized) is now visible. This line identifies volumes of coronal plasma heated to two million degrees. Such temperatures have removed half of the electrons from these iron atoms. This indicates the return of solar activity in solar cycle 23 which produced many intense geomagnetic storms from 2000-2005.
