This was an annular eclipse because some part of the sun's photosphere was visible at all times. These beads of light shone through valleys on the lunar limb. However, the sky was extremely clear at all levels, so one could see the same phenonema usually seen during a total solar eclipse. Here, the annular phase is about to begin and one can see the band of the solar chromosphere and a tall prominence to the right.
