Finally, a successful image of the flash spectrum at a total solar eclipse. This is from the start of totality. The red and many of the blue lines are from hydrogen dropping to a lower energy state, emitting energy at discrete frequencies. Helium emissions produce the yellow line.
The strange representation of the dates is due to the fact that it was the morning of 18 March in Indonesia, but the lunar shadow passed across the International Date Line and into the previous day.
