This is an enlargement of the previous image. The smaller apparent size of the moon allows one to see the lowest layers of the solar atmosphere, where the chromosphere ends and the corona begins. One can see an excessively bright and thin layer, the transition region, where the plasma in the corona accelerates to temperatures of over a million degrees by processes still not fully understood.
